At Tarcombe, we run two herds of horses, each playing a vital role in our breeding and training programs. Our main breeding herd consists of horses of mixed ages and genders, with a primary focus on mares and their foals. In parallel, we have our ridden herd, which also comprises a variety of ages and genders.
In both herds, natural behaviours and social structures are encouraged. By allowing horses to live in a mixed-age and mixed-gender environment, we promote a natural hierarchy and social interaction. This setting is instrumental in fostering the development of foals, as they learn essential social skills and behaviours from both their peers and adult horses.
Our ridden herd, similar to the breeding herd, benefits from a diverse mix of ages and genders. This group includes horses in various stages of their training and riding careers. By keeping our horses into a mixed herd, we support their mental and physical well-being. Social interaction within the herd reduces stress and promotes a calm and cooperative disposition, which is particularly beneficial for horses in training.
